Call for Manuscripts: Transnational Approaches to Culture

The transnational has become one of the most popular paradigms in Cultural Studies. On the one hand, it bears the promise of transformation: of the opportunity to move across and beyond geographic and disciplinary boundaries, tracing the mobility of peoples, cultures, languages, institutions, ideas, and ideologies around the globe. On the other hand, it also exposes the continued power of these boundaries, revealing structures of exclusion.

Our new book series Transnational Approaches to Culture is designed to showcase innovative scholarly work which not only maps these transnational entanglements but develops new methodological and theoretical approaches to interrogate them. Topics thus span cultural and historical reflections of migration, diaspora, and exile; globalization, cosmopolitanism and citizenship; and acts of border crossing, whether across geographies, cultures, or languages.

We invite proposals for monographs and edited volumes that not only engage with the transnational as practice, but also develop and contribute in novel ways to transnational theory and methodology. In so doing, we also welcome work that critically re-appraises seemingly ‘national’ canons and contexts in the light of transnational approaches. Volumes in the series draw on literary studies, theatre and performance studies, screen studies, the visual arts, music, media studies, popular culture, and material culture, and the historical intersections of these.

This series aims both to outline the most current questions in transnational studies and to shape the future direction of the field. Volumes are published in English, though material engaging with other languages, with translation and adaptation, and with multilingual and translingual contexts, is particularly welcome.

Proposals are reviewed by the series editors, drawing on the expertise of our international Advisory Board, before undergoing full peer review from at least two academics in related areas. Two to four volumes are published annually.
